Using Language Education to Promote Sustainability and Global Citizenship- Teaching English Language Skills to Promote Environmental Sustainability in Saudi Arabia through National Geographic Texts

Abstract

In line with global calls for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), higher education institutions are increasingly integrating sustainability concepts into curricula. Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University (PSAU), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has collaborated with National Geographic Learning (NGL) to incorporate visually rich and content-driven materials into English language courses. This study investigates how the integration of National Geographic texts within English language instruction can enhance students’ environmental awareness, eco-literacy, and global citizenship. Using a survey-based research design, the study examines learners’ perceptions of NGL materials and their influence on environmental knowledge, attitudes, critical thinking, and behavioural intentions related to sustainability. The findings indicate that the use of authentic, visually engaging texts fosters heightened environmental awareness and encourages responsible citizenship among learners. The study contributes to research on curriculum innovation and sustainability education by demonstrating how language education can serve as an effective platform for promoting environmental responsibility. The findings also align with Saudi Vision 2030, which emphasizes educational reform and sustainability as key drivers of socio-economic development.
