Gender Representation in Omani Folktales: An Analysis Through Kristeva's Symbolic and Semiotic Framework

Abstract

Oral traditions, including folk songs, myths, legends, and folktales, are integral aspects of every society, encapsulating collective beliefs, customs, religious practices, cultural heritage, and everyday lifestyles. Collectively termed "oral literature," these traditions serve as vital repositories of societal values. Omani folklore is particularly rich in oral literature, with folktales acting as significant vessels for cultural heritage, offering profound insights into the nation's traditions, values, and social norms. Although these narratives play a significant role in preserving and reflecting social constructs, few academic studies have explored the gender dynamics portrayed within them, leaving a gap in understanding the sociocultural foundations of gender roles within Omani society. To bridge this gap, this paper analyzes the representation of gender roles within six Omani folktales, employing qualitative methods, specifically content and thematic analysis, through a Kristevan feminist lens. The findings reveal four key themes, which are women's voice and agency, familial and communal support, transformation, and sacrifice, demonstrating that these tales not only mirror and uphold gender dynamics but also inspire people to challenge societal expectations. Therefore, this study contributes to Omani folklore studies, Middle Eastern studies, and literary criticism by offering a fresh feminist perspective on a largely understudied corpus and opening avenues for further interdisciplinary research.
